Review | Quay x Desi On The Low

Happy Beauty Tuesday y’all! We hope you had a super fun Labor Day weekend. We took advantage of the gorgeous Poconos weather and went bike riding and hiking. It was awesome!

Were you as excited as I was to get your hands on your very own pair of Quay x Desi Perkins shades? One look at ‘On the Low’ and they had to be mine!

I adore Desi Perkins. Out of all the major vloggers out there, she’s one I could identify myself with. She just seems real. So when she announced her Quay sunglasses collab, I literally had a minor aneurysm ordering so fast, affraid they were going to sell out. But alas I ordered my pair. HURRAY!

On June 24th, I received On The Low, and I was instantly in love. I mean in love. These sunglasses had Dee written all over them.

I took all of Quay’s recommendations to keep them in perfect condition. Never keep them on the bottom of your purse, don’t put them on the top of your head, don’t expose them too long to the sun (which I found odd since they are sunglasses), etc… In another words, I took care of these like a new born child.

On September 3rd, on a beautiful 70°F day with no humidity, I was on my way to the Poconos looking all cute in my On the Lows, when I felt a pop and this is what happened…

Yes the frame tore. I was speechless. I mean I took care of my shades with baby gloves. I couldn’t understand why this happened. And then I took a closer look and the other side is ready to crack as well. Why!? Por que!?

I LOVE these frames and I am still beyond upset over how easily they broke. And for no reason what’s so ever and crack!

There are a few other things that I didn’t like about them. So in the task of being honest, here they are:

Two things here. The paint on the inner area that rests over your ears, peels off and looks discolored. Also, there’s a gap between the legs and the over the ear plastic. My hair got caught in that spot every single time.

The legs are really flimsy. If you take a close look, they looked all crooked and bent. I always felt like I was going to break them. Granted those little things I could live with. Not the actual frame breaking.

What saddens me is that I paid over $70 USD for these with shipping and I have glasses that I’ve bought at Five Below that have turned out to be better quality.

It also depresses me because I love Desi Perkins and I will continue to support anything she does. However, being that this was my first pair of Quay sunglasses, I won’t be purchasing anything from them again. Maybe if they are on clearance and I have a coupon. Maybe.

I see it this way, if this is the quality they are putting out with one of the worlds most influential Youtubers, I’d hate to see what their other sunglasses are like.

Do you own the On The Low by Quay x Desi sunglasses? What do you think? It’s ok if your opinion is differnt than mine. I am just sharing my experience with y’all. Share with us below, on InstagramSnapChat,  TwitterFacebook, and or/ Tumblr.

XOXOXO!

Dee

UPDATE: I did reach out to Quay’s customer support and they did give me store credit. So if this happens to you, please make sure to contact them.

The same thing happened to mine. 😦 In the same exact spot a piece broke off and on the other lens too…. So disappointed

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

I had no idea so many other people were experiencing the same thing. It’s beyond disappointing. I really love these.

  2. Allison says:

Same thing happened to me today😭😭 I was better off buying $5 sunnies!!!

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

Don’t worry! Contact Quay. They will rectify it some how

  3. Sara says:

Omg!!! I felt like an idiot when this happend to me, and i took care of them just like you said… A newborn. I contacted them and they said i can return them and they will send me another pair… But yes they are all sold out 😦 i really loved those glasses. I think they need to make a hard frame to come with each pair… ( i also got store credit)

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

It’s crazy how it just happened. No reason. Just pop and done! I ordered a different pair. Hopefully is better quality.

  4. Karina Chavez says:

This just happened to mine too. I never wear them, and kept them on a special drawer for special occasions. This was my third time wearing them. I hope Quay can do something for me because I loved them so much.

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

That’s horrid! I bet you were as upset as me. They will certainly extend credit. All you have to do is send them pictures and they should send you credit.

  5. Joanna says:

This just happened to mine the other day!! I live in Atlantic Canada, so we don’t see sun very often. I’ve worn them maybe 3 times over the past 2 months (swapping between this pair, high key gold, and another pair of sunnies I’ve had for a while) and this pair seems to be the worst quality of all my sunnies! And they broke in the SAME spot after hardly wearing them? I took quays advice on how to properly care for them, and my high keys are still in one piece. I will be emailing them asap to get my store credit

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

Yes please email them. They gave me credit right away and just bought another pair. Not the same but equally as badass 😎

  6. soozy says:

This just happened to me, too. Lens fell out and then I noticed the crack that caused the lens to fall out. I’ve only worn these three times and have taken great care of them while wearing and not wearing them. So disappointed. Waiting to hear back from customer care.

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

I am SO sorry. It looks to be a design deffect so yes they are granting credit. I bought something different from them with the credit and they are super cute. Hopefully these last

  7. Brittney says:

Same thing happened to me 😦 so sad cuz I felt so badass with these

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

I KNOW! Me too. People used to stop me on the street wearing them 😭

  8. zurita says:

why don’t more people post about this… Mine broken for no reason. I thought it was something I did, but it just bad sunglasses. I was thinking, I didn’t drop them, why?

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

It bascially comes down to a design defect. There’s WAY too many people going throught the same thing. This is why the High Keys were brought back on not this model. You should contat Quay support. They’ll help you out.

  9. Cristina says:

What did you say to customer care? I have had the exact same thing happen to mine as well as another pair called Vesper. I have been hesitant to contact customer service. When I contacted them about the first pair, they told me it was no longer covered by the 30 day warranty and there was nothing they could do. Thanks!

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

I sent them pictures of the shades as well as I forwarded my original email. On the low is an actual defect they have to do something for you. At least store credit.

  10. Jackie says:

The same exact thing happened to me and I only wore them 4 times and took good care of them. I wish I would have contacted customer service but I didn’t think I could do anything since it was a while after I bought them so I threw them out 😭 Thanks for posting. I thought I was the only one with this issue.

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

If you have pictures, I would still contact them. They could probably do something for you.

  11. Diane says:

I had the same thing happen. Symmetrical cracks on both of the shades, however, mine were in the exact same spot but on the outer edge. I purchased mine @ Nordstrom and had no issue with return. And i didnt even have a receipt since I paid cash, but regardless, no questions asked and super easy. I really loved the shades and am so tempted to buy another pair since its avail @ Bloomingdales right now – but after reading all these occurences it makes it easier not to. Did Quay respond and actually say that the design was defective?

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

Bloomingdale’s is great with their return policy. No they did not admit to it, however it’s so obvious. All the other shades came back and even Desi received a 4th shade design. I am guessing this is to makeup for the On The Low massive defect. But thats just a guess.

  12. Spurdislove says:

Same damn thing happened to mine as well. It was my first pair of Quays too so I’m not so sure if I’ll be purchasing from them again. Discount or not. 😦

  13. Alex says:

Same thing happened to me. I don’t wear mine too much because I wanted them to last so it’s definitely not wear and tear. The matte finish started peeling off when I first bought them. I was bummed but thought “things happen”. Yesterday I had them on when I heard the pop and looked to find the crack like yours. Im mostly sad because this was my favorite design from the colab. Sucks that the quality is crap. Not worth the $67 bucks I paid 😦

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

I know. They really are an awesome pair. Its sad that they obviously have a factory defect

      1. Alex says:

Update: I emailed Quay back in November but never heard anything back. 😦 I’ll take it as a loss.

      2. Nerd & Lace says:

I would try again and forward them the email you sent them last year. Not ok

  14. Renee says:

The SAME EXACT thing happened to me the other day! I was just driving along in my car when I heard a very loud crack, and there they were, cracked in the same exact spot yours are! I’m so upset they were my favorite sunglasses and I did spend a lot on them. I am going to attempt reaching out to Quay because I haven’t even owned these for a year! They were backordered for so long I have only have them since July.

  15. jocelyn says:

Wow this just happened to me this weekend. Its the same spot as yours! I couldn’t believe it! I’ll be contacting quay for sure about this. After they cracked, I noticed other small fractures around the sunglasses frame.

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

Yeah definitely do that. Because I was able to get another pair and these I loooove

  16. Silvia says:

I really thought I was the only one. I even bought another pair because I thought it was M fault and the same thing happened. I really liked the rose gold detail but, I can’t fins them. They really suit my face shape. I’m not sure if we can complain to Quay and ask for a relaunch in this style but, a little bit thicker by the lens so this doesn’t happen again.

  17. MC says:

Mine just broke in the exact same spot. So many people had this problem. I don’t see how they can make them so expensive when they break like that. It’s very disappointing. I didn’t get mine from quay but I emailed them about the issue and they said even if I did buy them from quay there’s nothing they can do after 3 months. Those were my favorite and it sucks they were so limited. I couldn’t find them anywhere even if I paid someone to find me another pair.

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

I am so sorry. It was certainly a manufacturing error. I hope you could get them replaced

  18. Michie says:

Same thing happened to my Vespers and I hunted another pair down only to see that they’ve now cracked after a couple months of owning them. Contacted Quay, only asking if this was an issue, as I didn’t want to invest time and money into finding another pair and dealing with the same issue. They didn’t even answer the question, only told me my purchase was basically too old for them to do anything. I will never buy their products again.

    1. Nerd & Lace says:

You should continue to contact them. I wouldn’t stop until they refund you

      1. Michie says:

Their response to that issue was enough for me to wash my hands of them. I have at least 5 pairs of glasses I’ve bought from them. For 2 of the same style to break the same way and they not even acknowledge anything was wrong with them is insane. I most certainly cannot be the only person this has happened to. I honestly don’t even care about a refund. They sell crap, know that it’ll break and don’t even care. They’re trash.

  19. Rossy says:

Yesss same thing happened to me and hardly got to wear them very bad quality for $65 and I love Desi but not the outcome of these sunglasses.
